++ Invisible as good ... ?++

Invisible lab presentation Tuesday 24.10
1. Theoretical i,nput on research approach
2. Exercise

David Foster Wallace quote about fish and water
[two fish speak to each other, one menions water, the one goes what the hell is water?]
IL focuses on that invisibility we rely on / are floating into

what discipline? industrial design, information design...?
Design not bound to a discipline; post-disciplinary
term that was ecountered in design conferences; post disciplinary anything for problems that need to be adressed from several disciplines; tries to leave old disciplines behind
Stephanie industrial design
Christian information design; digital field

"we believe the best design is invisible"

tacit knowing; noticing

everyday objects; it's about observation

glass attracts being shattered; wood is 'treated' differently, maybe burned or written on

bike basket with some trash in attracts more trash.
[reminds me of the slippery 'broken window' theory]

tacit-knowledge
connections between design and tacit knowledge

ways of knowing are intimately intertwined with the objects we use
you cannot not design; [ i disagree :D ^ ^ ] you can share your disagreement yes, later!

two terms of tacit knowledge:

example: human face recognition
distal term: the meaning we can see and talk abuot
proximal term: the elements that are vital for constructing the meaning [..]

if you see a familar faces there's some elements of that face that will make you think you know them
[ interestingly, artificial intelligence processes to 'recognize' faces also focuses on some features., but the result i some faces (dark skinned, for example) become less visibile than others ]

some elements terms are necesary to contstruct the meaning of another overall term

sometimes the tool gets integrated, we notice directly the meaning of the distal term ( the soup is burned ) but we  don't have a direct perception of the burned bottom. ?

thinking about responsibility: if we're making good tools we're making tools nobody is aware of

the most invisible the tool, the better ( not in an ethical sense )
the least clicks the better an interface .... so we are doing everything bad with the splinter! that's cool
aha was thinking the same :D we can adress this invisibility thing
yes I think it's good to share later our chosen 'badness'

transparency of tools
someone must have written a master thesis on it or something!
transparency as a thinking tool to talk about what we are aware and what we are not

what happens in the moment of noticing
... in the moment of integration

the concept of invisibility in design risks to carry with itself a 'normal' 'generic' normated body attached

seems dangerous to have design-thinking keep a priority over the world. when non normative uses are not recognizes as use
tricky to normalised a particular use of things

Conventions / technology
Tacit mediation : it's situated, immediate, time-based and processual, relational.
> example of the music of a violin; a form of communication between people and things

what we take for granted is constantly changing

"technology is society made durable" by Bruno Latour

scripts, a concept describe by madeleine? ?
there can be open an closed scripts to how to use a certain technology, possibility to override a script..

panopticon script. the script forbids invisibiltiy of the prisoners.
you inscribe in your behavior the presence of the observer whether there or not.

the hostile design is invisible to the wanted behaviors. it rejects on the unwanted forms of life in the public space

exercise - session of observation of the obvious
walk in jakominiplatz; very dense space; just observe the situation without drawing any conclusions from these observations and come up with some questions. Could help to pretend that you're a person from 100 years ago who doesn't know all the technology present
the challenge would be not to imagine why someone would put a cup somewhere but instead observe it and formulate some question; why is it a cup or a plate; could it be possible for a cup in another material
collect as many questions possible
focusing on objects or action, manners? if possible focusing on the in-between, the interactions between people and objects, people and people, etc

How do you know you've found a good question ? Someone can share a question...
- why the clocks of the plaatz have no numbers?
- what could signal that the car is stopping (from the front)
there's one better than the other, what are the characteristics for it to be better?
a better question is one that opens up to other questions, for a further research
- why so many clocks? it's a bad question

- sign of entering and leaving pedestrians zone
many things going on on those signs, speed limits, car signs too, .. it has multiple icons that you recognize traffic signs as one
didn't understand there was a pedestrian zone, that it was about people could pass or not
signs are very complex and contredict themselves
a sign that crosses one person and below another that allows couple that seem to be straight (one male, one female)

a good question in one that relates to what society is constructing

saw somebody with some kind of metal bike, then they put a sort of necklace around the bike; esthetical approach to this bike; also saw some doors that had some metal things you could put inside. Is this for esthetic purpose, to say you belong somewhere, what does it signal

automaat for needles, syringes - chosen invisibility; had an issue with a hostile design we saw earlier, the hostile design is visible only to those who are unwanted, not to the desirable user who just wants to sit while waiting and not sleeping for instance
> a question that could emerge from this:  how can we leave the inhabitants space for desirable visibility

back to the signs; they are standing, looking fashionable, able-bodied; a lot of things going on wonder if it leaves space for other types of agency
