FRIDAY 9/06

10:00 : Workshop co-repair

Let's put our hands dirty together with broken devices this morning !

Presentation of Repair Together
ALSO, CHECK THE PAD "Repair together" some other ppl put notes there

scaling our habits with electronics devices

open everything !
Every device that you take apart makes u more confident and knowledgable

Best way to get comfortable is open up devices

Sewing machine is an amasing one to open.
Devices are result of design choices, money invested and in some devices this is used anti-repair, extra effort was put to make it hard to open, while in the past maybe ti was designed for reparability.
(Note down we you notice anti-repair approaches, never buy them again :-)
repairability scale

pre diagnostic :
listen sometimes interrogate the owner
-> sudden pblm or over time ?
-> what caused it ? liquid, prolonged use, choc?
-> was there any noise or smell, rattling sounds when shaking..
-> does it pop the breaker -the fuse, le disjoncteur -

then inspect !

opening part :
    - after double checking that it it necessary
    - beware of permanent damage (double check with owner)
    - YouTube is your bestfriend (most times there is someone's video opening up the same device), iFixit is a great ressource (guides)

Vacuum Cleaner classics
when you open you think everything is fine, most of the times is the cable that gets pulled out of the plug..

85% of the time it's the plug, not's what's inside :')

TOOLS : complete toolset is difficult to reach, but to deal with 80% of devices an iFixit kit is what you need

repairability scale
magnetic part in laptops?

other anti-repair techniques than terrible screws? well no screws and just glue
opening with all damages is super hard (exemple of coffee machines)
advocacy group to fight these practices? right for repair groups do exist; belgium about the implement a repair score on objets
the repair score can be high because of having 'genius bars' >@pple, but on your own those things are unopenable... well ok they can send you a kit of 36kg to fix yourself:

give and take for iFixit

When the device is open :

mechanical failure :
false friends:
* beware of WD40; it atacks plastic and rubber so if you dont clean it after using it it might eat some parts overtime
* dont use vinigar for coffee machine! vinigar is eating joints use citric acid instead

what about contact cleaner ? (...)
alcohol = meh (isopropil is better)

electrical failure :
when there are no LEDs, no movement, no heat, but there should

example of the lamp :
unswitch is dead. What would we do/check ?
    -> check the bulb
-> check the fuse (definition of the fuse.....open the circuit)
    -> check the switch

often is just an element that is dirty and needs a little wash/care

multimeter = beep = good enough
another tool that check continuity without breaking ???

smaller is harder
-> electronic components
-> fuses (the harder is to find them, many shapes colors etc)
-> check if the fuses is brown or not (but careful it's always the main pbm, sometimes it's a short circut inside the circuit)
-> usual supect : capacitor. it is filled with chemical.
example on an apple computer motherboard.

repairability scale
screwdriver (all sizes and shapes) + flexible screwdriver (same)
also
- lubricant grease
- glue
- citric Acide -beware of WD40
- optical lens cleaner

- multimeter
- component testers (also in tweezer version! )
- soldering
Framework computers designed for repair and upgrade

watch out the component tester my need repairing! :'D

once a month = repair cafés = you have help
there's at ULB also = fix it yourself

Q&A / inputs

> Is there refused objects to repair ? size, exposure
(stuff like a washing machine, no)
don't expect to have a repaired stuff at the end also
teaching sessions, sometimes it can be super specific

> why are you a repair café volounteer ?
enjoy it to repair
really pissed at throwing something. everything is reparable and reusable
take some devices and open them to understand how it is working
it is okay to open devices, and look inside.
[see: Tim Hunkin - Secret Life of Machines

 many machines taken apart.

> Are there shared documents designed by Repair Together?
The content of all the trainings is shared online:
https://repairtogether.be/en/our-ressources/repair-manuals-en-en/

> Are repair cafes hoarding some materials for eventual fixes?
centralized somewhere(?)
recuperation of other components (exemple of rikimbili) in order to reuse them for something else

> what are the main objects that people bring to repair cafés or people who are coming to this ?
some because of not wanting to throw away/ interest in repairing
some just for saving money
some have emotional bonds to old devices

> Tim Hunkin video that Amy shared earlier in the pad, discussion about it

[> other question]

> Did someone brought a broken heart to repair ? *collective awww* -> object with emotional bonds, that belonged to a loved one

11 : 00 -  let's repair stuff
